November 28. 2007 Neil Gaiman's book signing surprise Click on the pictures to see the whole series Neil Gaiman is a rock star in the Philippines. Rumors had it that people were going straight from parties the night before (like the one in the previous post) to stand in line for Neil's book signing the next morning. Well, to be fair it was just across the street. In the line that morning was young advertising person Maui and her boy friend Jason. Maui is a fun girl clowning around a lot as she did here having her book signed by Neil. What she didn't know was that Neil and Jason had conspired to give her a little surprise. When Maui read her dedication, still on stage and next to Neil, it said: "Maui - PS: Will you marry Jason? - Neil. That put a very abrupt stop to Maui's irreverence. While she was still in total shock and Jason on his knees to stick the ring on her finger there was applause and not a dry eyelid from a crowd of about 300 advertising people. The hopeless romantic that I am, I was wondering what Jason would have done if she would have said - no. But to be truthful, I had a bit of a frog in my throat as well. November 23. 2007 Neil Gaiman's inspiration I am shooting on the Advertising congress in Subic, Philippines. Neil Gaiman is the special speaker guest. I ran into him after a press conference and took this picture. Here is proof that Neil Gaiman get's his ideas from the Stick Insect Hunter Magazine. I knew it.

I can't help myself. Every time I see a bush or tree I must inspect it for hidden insects. Some of them. like for example stick insects are very well camouflaged and very difficult to find. There used to be an animal that was even better camouflaged than a stick insect. In fact it was so good at mimicry, so well hidden that even it's own mating partners couldn't find it. Unfortunately the species died out pretty fast. More notes

November 5. 2007 A Fun Day Click on the pictures to see more Kids are cute, kids are fun and many times a huge pain in the butt. The butt pain part is usually reserved for private moments with parents except those well publicized fits in the cereal aisle in the local super market. But we all enjoy watching kids having fun. The kids Nyx and her troupe of volunteers hang out with don't get much of the fun stuff. Most of their time the spent in the hospital tormented by vicious diseases and their sometimes even more vicious cures. Those kids have cancer, the biggest unfairness in the world. Some of them will live, some of them won't. Generally the odds are stacked against them. The kids are possibly aware of it, their parents definitely are. The kids see their friends suddenly not show up anymore one day while the parents live with the unimaginable fear that the most valuable parts of their lives will probably not be there in a few months. Nyx, a missionary as much as a visionary has made it the purpose of her life to make sure that the little time that those families have left together is spent in a wonderful, fun way and pregnant with memories. Which is something most of them could hardly afford in a world where a Big Mac is a rare treat. She spends half her time running around soliciting help from people and the other half making sure the kids have moments, hours or even days, depending on the budget, that they and their parents will never ever forget. Last Monday we went out on one of those events with about a hundred kids and their families to a beautiful resort at Pansol, Laguna. The owner of the Villa San Miguel Resort and a generous sponsor who wants to stay anonymous (thank you my friend), EMBC buses, Danny Chan, and David of David's Salon made it all possible. Of course let's not forget Nyx Martinez, her family (12 siblings!) and all her volunteers, too many to be mentioned here and deserving much more than plain credit anyway. And a fun day it was. Only the prospect of large portions of spaghetti and fried chicken could pry those kids out of the pool. And everybody got a free haircut compliments of David's Salon. Imagine having fun getting your hair cut.
