I came to Munich just
in time for the official opening of the Oktoberfest.
Pure coincident though.
I remembered that most of the action is happening at the "Schottenhammel"
tent.
One of the 15 enormous beer tents at the Oktoberfest.
We came an hour early but every seat in every tent had been taken,
with people cueing overnight to get a good seat.
There are only a couple of hundred thousands seats available.
I wanted to get some good shots so I packed out my big camera, broke
the police barrier and stood right in front of the Schottenhammel
tent next to the Deutsche Welle team.
Everybody else was shooed away but apparently I managed to look
professional enough that they wouldn't bother me. It must have been
the Stick Insect Hunter T-shirt I was wearing.
The parade came in and with it the major of Munich and other dignitaries.
I mingled with them, exchanged pleasantries and everything was fine.
Only when I asked the major in perfect Bavarian: " Woas is
jetzt, kafst mia a Mass?" (Are you buying me a beer or what?),
they seemed to get a little embarrassed.
The police in Bavaria isn't that brutal as you might think. They
didn't even kick me when they dragged me away.
